Origin
Pantenger Genmaicha is cultivated in the Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan, where a ninth-generation family-owned tea estate boasts over 250 years of mastery in artisan tea production.
According to Japanese folklore, a significant moment in tea history occurred in the 15th Century when a servant, inadvertently dropping grains of rice hidden in his sleeve while serving tea to a Samurai, resulted in unexpected consequences. The Samurai, in a fit of anger, executed the servant but later discovered that the rice improved the tea's flavor. Regretting his actions, he named the enriched brew Genmai Cha ("roasted rice tea") in honor of the servant.
Brewing the Perfect Cup
Achieving the ideal cup of Pantenger Organic Genmaicha green tea requires careful attention to detail. The tea can present as fresh and nutty or excessively bitter, depending on the water temperature. To extract the tea leaves' sweetness, aim for a temperature range of 170ºF to 180ºF. Higher temperatures will yield more bitter and astringent notes, including caffeine and catechins.
Green teas release their soluble components quickly, so infuse for no longer than 2 minutes. The recommended ratio is one pyramid bag per 6 fl. oz. of water, and each bag can be brewed up to three times. For optimal flavor, use filtered or spring water to avoid the taste-dulling effects of excessive minerals or chlorine.
The Advantage of Pyramid Bags
The large pyramid bags offered by Pantenger enable the tea leaves to fully unfurl and impart their flavors seamlessly into your cup. Made from sugar cane fibers, these bags are nearly invisible during infusion, allowing you to observe the leaves interacting with hot water. Unlike traditional nylon or paper bags, Pantenger's bags do not taint the tea with undesirable flavors and are completely chemical-free. Additionally, they are biodegradable, non-GMO, and free from allergens and gluten, made right in the USA.
